England - North York Moors to Scarborough

The Whitby Abbey ruins that we see today are what remain of the Benedictine abbey that was founded after the Norman Conquest in the 11th Century. In the 13th century the site was again completely rebuilt in the Gothic style. As with other sites, Whitby Abbey was suppressed by Henry VIII in 1539 and although used by generations of the Cholmley family it fell into ruins again in the 1700s.
